SCARCE Kunitomo Matchlock Short Musket – Samurai Era – ART – ULTRA RARE
For sale is a Kunitomo Matchlock Short Musket chambered in what we believe is 14mm. Serial number- NONE. This musket is in fantastic condition for its age, featuring intricate artwork on the 14.5-inch barrel, including an image of a hawk. The pistol could have been manufactured anytime between the late 16th century and the early 18th century. Although there is some minor rust, it's impressive how well-preserved this matchlock is, especially considering the iron barrel's age. There is rust, dust, and powder residue inside the bore. The barrel is roughly 14.5 inches making this a pistol version of the much longer matchlocks the Japanese used at the time. The trigger and match arm still works but the springs are worn so the arm does not lock back completely.
There are markings on the bottom of the barrel indicating that it was made by Kunitomo, a renowned gunsmith family and village in Japan, which even has a museum dedicated to gunsmithing. In addition to the markings, the barrel was treated in a way that gives it a black color, which has helped make it resistant to rust. Furthermore, there is a poem painted on the stock beneath the barrel. The closest translation of the poem reads: "Friends of the Country have abundant resources and proportion." If you feel this is an inaccurate translation of the poem, there is a photo, please let us know if this is inaccurate!
